M. J. Johnson brings extensive grant writing and development expertise to support your project and overall mission. In addition to his writing ability, M.J.’s breadth of experience as a businessperson, corporate consultant, public affairs professional, non-profit president, and government official will enhance your organization’s growth, development and grant writing success.

Early in his career, M. J. Johnson served as an assistant to a city administrator. Later, he served as the Special Assistant to a member of the United States Congress where he wrote public works legislation and directed all federal grants and projects in a six county region of California. During this time he helped over 400 organizations secure more than $230 million in funding from government sources, private and corporate foundations.

In 1987 M.J. established M. J. Johnson Company, a full service public affairs & communications management firm specializing in public relations management, governmental relations, and lobbying. He served outstanding companies like Hewlett Packard and IBM. His experience spans many industries including education, manufacturing, high tech, and agriculture, among others. 

M.J. has used his expertise to help people effectively communicate, protect and advance their vital interests. Since 1995 he has worked as a full-time, professional grant writer working with community colleges, universities, K-12 schools and districts. His proposals enjoy a lifetime success rate of over 80 percent. Between October, 1999 and April, 2001, 100 percent of his proposals – 33 in a row – were funded. Since 1996, he has secured nearly $114 million in grants for his clients.

M.J. holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, graduating with honors from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. He later completed 45 units of postgraduate study in Education and a certificate from the University of California, Los Angeles.
